June 7th

We had a good day again.  A question came up about using wikipedia for research today.  I have always said that they can use it.  They are doing research for some more mainstream things and the information on wikipedia is fairly accurate.  I saw this as a teachable moment to remind them to always have more than one source of information for their research.  Also to be able to discern the differences in the websites.  The example I used was which is more trustworthy the national energy council of canada or wikipedia.  The kids all said the nation energy council which would be correct.  Wikipedia is a good place to start your research but as the saying goes you never put all your eggs in one basket.

Tomorrow we have our spelling test

The math exam has been postponed until Thursday. We have several kids going to the city track meet and I could use the extra day to ensure they have the material down pat.

Excited

I am a bit excited this morning.  Alec came up to me all excited because he worked at home on his inquiry project.  He came back to school with a couple of writing pieces that are very well done.  While I tried to tell him I was proud and impressed it didn't mean as much as his partners looking at his work and telling him what a great job he did.  The expression of pride on his face is what makes teaching an invaluable experience for me.  I am glad I am around for the ride to see the growth of this fine young man.

This is one example of the great things that your kids are doing.  Each and every day they work so hard here at school.  They are self-motivated and driven, most of the time!  The student centered model we are using in class for science and social is really getting them to learn more than what the government is telling me what I am supposed to teach them!  They are a great group to work with thanks for letting me borrow them for the school year.
